![]() ![]() George Gleig, in the 3rd edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica Encyclopedia – An EtymologyĮncyclopedias of various types had been published since antiquity, beginning with the collected works of Aristotle and the famous Natural History of Pliny the Elder. ![]() “For perfection seems to be incompatible with the nature of works constructed on such a plan, and embracing such a variety of subjects.” ![]() But although it might be the most popular encyclopaedia ever printed, it was not the first. The history of its 15 editions alone would be subject of an entire book. The Britannica is the oldest English-language encyclopaedia still being produced today. On December 6, 1768, the first volume of the first edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica was published in London as, ‘ A Dictionary of Arts and Sciences, compiled upon a New Plan‘.
